Thank you @QrizB - I think I need to pull together actuals. October is going to be a frightening time1

Hello! Resurrecting this after gathering actual readings.
Elec
June 20. -1161 (have given an augmented negative figure because meter resets at 99999. Actual reading was 98838)
June 21. 2263
June 22. 5579
Gas
June 20. 25501
June 21. 27300
June 22. 29060
My current suggested DD is £274 on Octopus standard variable tariff but I’m calculating it as 111 annually…why is my calc so far off? (365 x standing charge)+(annual kWh x unit rate)
Overnight currently we use 0.7 kWh when running ‘nothing’ ie fridge/freezer still on and standby on some appliances and charging gadgets.Aberdeen - cold - flipping thought about putting heating on the past three nights since temps dropped down again.1 -
Hi @waitpatiently.
It looks like you are using around 3,300 kwhs of electricity and around 19-20,000 kwhs of gas (multiplying your usage figures above by 11.17) per year.
I'd estimate that on the predicted new price cap rates this would cost you around £5,000 - £6,000 over the 12 months between Oct 1st 2022 and 30th Sept 2023. So that would be a DD averaged out of £500 a month.
This is based on standing charges staying about the same, and average unit rate over the year of about 65p for electricity and about 16p for gas. These are of course my estimates.
It is a scary time, and I wish you and your family all the best.2 -
Oh my god. Thank you zombie.Zombie_government said:Hi @waitpatiently.

What is the multiplier for gas from? 😭0 -
It was a bit of guess from me, but I took a punt that your usage numbers were based on meter readings. If the numbers on your meter are in m3, then you multiply this by 11.something (can vary a bit depending on other factors). If it's in feet3 then it's 32.something.What is the multiplier for gas from? 😭
Hopefully I am wrong and your gas usage was in kwhs.

Gee. Ok, thank you for clarifying @Zombie_government that’ll be the next thing I’ll check. That actually aligns it with octopus’ estimate for me. In which case, I’m sadly not overpaying and the reality for me is the same as everybody else!Zombie_government said:

Definitely check which units you are using, and then you can estimate fairly accurately how many kwhs you use each year.
Also, my estimates for the unit rates and standing charges over the next year could end up being waaaaaaay off! They are based roughly on the latest predictions from Cornwall Insight, but anything could happen. These are the numbers I'm using for my own calculations though.1 -
Champion. Thank you and all the best. I’m off to cast lots for which organ to sellZombie_government said:Definitely check which units you are using, and then you can estimate fairly accurately how many kwhs you use…0 -
Same here up north, not really enjoying a cold house when the nightime temperature outside is 10C and the sun is hiding. Been very tempted to put heating on too but have so far stopped myself. Have had warm drinks, blanket on and hot cherry stone bag instead.waitpatiently said:Aberdeen - cold - flipping thought about putting heating on the past three nights since temps dropped down again.
From Oct I will be payng £230 a month to cover annual usage but I have fixed electric and on tracker for gas. Without that it would be a lot more. I have been using 2400 electric and 11500 gas 3 bed end terrace northern Scotland, although I think this has come down a bit as I am very conscious of use now due to cost. I suspect reducing shower time has helped most. There are ways to save for sure.

Your usage is my aspiration!Northern_Wanderer said:Same here up north, not really enjoying a cold house when the nightime temperature outside is 10C and the sun is hiding…There are ways to save for sure. Not sure how I can halve my gas…it’ll call for some drastic measures.
Being so far north is so cold and it also makes it tricky to avoid the dryer already in August.
I am going to make an effort this month and see what difference I can make.0
