Typical monthly DD for 3 bed semi, Northern Scotland, 2 adults 2 babies

It’s my one year mse forum anniversary today! I must have a thing about posting in June.

There’s every chance a thread exists although I couldn’t find it easily through search function. Hopefully my question is allowed too.

What have people seen their monthly electricity and gas DD jump up by?

Since April, I know they escalated for everyone but mine went from £110ish to suggested £274 monthly, which seems excessive and unsure how to ‘check’ whether this is true as a result of the cap increase or my unseasonably increased usage in the warmer Apr/May period.

£2000 a year (£170 a month) is a reasonable ballpark for a small mains-gas-heated family home where the residents are careful over energy use. All-electric is more expensive. More too if the home is draughty or poorly-insulated, or a bungalow, or if you use more than an average amount of heating / hot water, or keep reptiles  own a hot tub / have an electric car etc.
If you can find your typical annual usage for each fuel (there will be numbers on your latest bill) and share them, we can give a more accurate cost estimate.

Thanks @QrizB - will dig them out and post back
  • Hi,
easy to check your own usage, set up a wee spreadsheet, take regular readings, at least once a month, so as to keep an eye on usage and cost.

Frugal, because you keep posting it, can I let you know that "wee spreadsheets" are not something that is easy for everyone. I would have no clue how to do that.

I consider myself to be of average intelligence but left school in the 80s before IT was a subject. My maths is ok and I can work out my energy bills without spreadsheets.

East Scotland, 2 adults in an end building tenement, half the flats have been unoccupied for yonks.

This year we have used 3838.40 kWh and its cost me just under £266 for both gas and electric with one of the most expensive big 6.

Last year we used 8035.45 kWh, cost just over £522.

    Electric cost is under £30pm.

Last month we used 6 m3 gas units, month before was 10.

We've an electric shower and on demand hot water, CGH gets used winter evenings for a few hours when really cold outside and there's always one of us WAH.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • I’m baaaack. Figures for annual usage estimated (May-June 2022) at:

Electricity Estimated Annual Usage 3420.4 kWh

Gas Estimated Annual Usage 20562 kWh

but I then dug out a statement from Jan-March 2021 and estimate was far lower with similar perceived gas usage based on lifestyle (I know meters don’t lie but it’s just so much higher with the above readings). Previously:

    E 3578.6 kWh
    G 16946 kWh

    Same supplier (Octopus)

I guess question is how do I track my biggest gas-chomping appliances at home? Or have rates just shot up so much???

    thanks ❤️

You're completely wasting your time with estimates.  You need FACTS.  Find actual meter readings 12 months apart (ones you taken, or from a meter reader or smart) and work from there.
If your figures are accurate you have higher than average consumption for both gas and electricity, but you may make bigger saving by trimming the electricity usage first because an electricity kWh probably costs you four times as much as a gas kWh.  Start by making sure you're not using any electric showers or immersion heaters.

Gerry1 is entirely correct about estimates. However:
I’m baaaack. Figures for annual usage estimated (May-June 2022) at:
Electricity Estimated Annual Usage 3420.4 kWh
Gas Estimated Annual Usage 20562 kWh
On the current SVT that would cost about £2750/yr, £229/month.
But I then dug out a statement from Jan-March 2021 and estimate was far lower with similar perceived gas usage based on lifestyle (I know meters don’t lie but it’s just so much higher with the above readings). Previously:
    E 3578.6 kWh
    G 16946 kWh
And that would cost £2530/yr, £211/month.
Note that prices are expected to rise by more than 40% in October, which (for those numbers) could be an extra £90/month or so.
