  • If you want Norton then buy it, here's at least one who's used it for 7 trouble free years. Just had a "free" upgrade to 2008 from Symantec so that must be the cheapest?
Every time Norton gets a mention the so called "experts" crawl out of the woodwork to knock it. It's like a stuck record !

Presumably you've tried different AV software. I used to use Norton myself, it was only when trying something different that it picked up the viruses already on my machine and how much smoother my pc ran without it. I've seen the same thing again and again with other PCs. I don't claim to be an expert but if I see and had personal experience of something being carp then I'd rather share that experience to prevent the same horrible problems that happened to me and people I know from happening to others. I thought that was in keeping with the ethos of this board.

If someone came onto a fitness board asking for the cheapest way to get cigarettes I'm not going to end up giving info on the cheapest supplier. If others want to do that then fine but I don't expect to be slagged off for taking an approach of what I see IMO as a better approach for the OP. In fact ethos of this site surely, something better for less money!!! Not sure your post is in keeping with forum etiquette.

    Hey, 400 000 Lemmings can't be wrong :)

I'm not a norton expert, but know you can't polish a turd! I've come into contact a good few times over many years, and it still don't shine!
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
  • Hi ALYMAC76 why don't you check up on what people here are saying and DO your parents a favour? Norton is very pc resource heavy and will slow things down. Would you put a few concrete breeze-blocks into your parents car boot to slow them down and waste fuel?

No, every time Norton is mentioned, people who have used the FREE alternatives try to tell people like you that they dont need to spend money on antivirus software that (a) isnt very good and (b) is resource heavy.

Thats not being a stuck record, its honest to goodness moneysaving advice! :money:

And how much has Norton cost the average user over seven years then?
  • If you want to pay for a decent product get NOD32 from a company called eset - far better and far less resource hungry. Failing that go for the free alternatives others have mentioned.

Used Norton in the past without any problems over several PC's.

Only real complaint is that it is quite resource hungry and hits the performance considerably especially if your PC's low spec.

Detection Rates aren't too bad either.

However I would either go for the free versions now such as AVG or if paying as someone mentioned, NoD32.
  • do you think people "slag off" norton for no good reason? me thinks people are offering their views based on experience. You can buy whatever you want and find out for yourself. I once upon a time tried norton and was not impressed, it took over my PC and was a pain in the ar*e to try and remove. so I would not use it again, but the choice is yours.
