Silly me - if you've turned the power off, then the heating wouldn't have power, so wouldn't come on.

Is your new boiler a combi type? If so, a thermostatic mixer shower will, indeed, be your best bet - a FAR better shower.

It certainly is a new combi boiler so going to price some new mixer showers up and hopefully a cheap and cheerful new bathroom suite :)

My Dad has been round this morning to loosen my stop tap after me freaking out the other day when I couldn't turn it off and asked to have a look at the shower whilst he was here and he moved the valve feeding the shower and no water spurted out.  I put the power back on just to show him it was broken and low and behold, it's working! He's obviously got the golden touch.  No doubt on it's last legs and not sure how long it will continue to work but my Dad thinks he is a superhero (to be fair I always thought he was) and hopefully it will last a bit longer until I get someone booked in for the new shower etc :):)

Ha-ha - how annoying is that!

No reason why you cannot continue to use the shower until it is replaced, tho' you might want to consider turning it off at the isolation valve after use.
Having said that, if it DOES turn itself off properly with the shower's control - as it should - then I personally wouldn't be concerned about just leaving it; it is extremely unlikely it will turn itself back ON by itself - once off, it should stay off. But obviously be ready to run to the isolating valve the next time it fails to turn off when told to.
Most likely the inlet valve in the shower is a bit sticky. This valve is opened - and held open - by electricity, but shuts closed under return spring pressure when the power is removed (ie the shower is turned off). In your case, tho', it was stuck open. With the water pressure removed (by you closing the isolating valve), it then had time to slowly 'unstick' and pop closed again. In which case there is every chance it will stick open again during a future shower.
If that is the cause - and I can't think of any other - then the valve is still actually 'working', but just sticky. That is almost certainly competent-DIY fixable with a clean-down and a smear of silicone grease. Is your dad up to that?! :-)
Or just live with it, and run to the isol valve when it stays running.

Definitely consider a thermostatic shower mixer run from the combi when you update the bathroom - a different quality of shower.
