Electric Boiler instead of Air Source Heat Pump?

The type of "smart" that I don't like is thinks-it-can-do-better-than-I-can smart. So I don't want a "learning" controller, I want one that gives me the control. That's why I chose Drayton Wiser over Nest/Hive.
To the OP, either there is something wrong with your oil boiler or something wrong with your house; you should not be using that much oil to heat a normal-sized house with half-decent insulation in what was a normal/mild winter.Reed3 -

However, even the likes of Nest (Hive doesn't learn, it's actually one of the "poorer" from an energy efficiency pov "smart" thermostats) learning mode can be easily overridden (albeit that you have then paid for something that you are not using).
Everybody's need/wants/situation are different though so I advise one to do the research & choose what best fits them.0 -
Thats a big ol heat pump. After being an ASHP sceptic to actually installing one and loving it i've learned a lot.
Sizing for heat pumps is very important, much more so than a fossil fuel boiler. Indeed oversizing one is worse than undersizing.
If it were me i would look to insulate the house as much as possible first. Then install the smallest heatpump you can get away with and supplement with Log burners in areas where you want high (19 degc+) temps.
Given the next bump in electric prices that is coming even ASHPs with decent Cops (2.5-3.0) is starting to look pricey compared to wood.

Just to give you another alternative. Have you considered a Pellet Boiler?
We're off the gas grid and the old oil boiler was smelly and the oil tank was very unsightly. Despite the HUGE increase in pellet prices it is way cheaper than electric heating.
We did consider ASHP, but the radiator sizing put us off.
