Eurowings won't refund

My friend and I are traveling to Poland in August.
We had booked flights from Birmingham to Wroclaw via Dusseldorf with Eurowings as one booking for each of us.  All of the confirmation emails came to us in both German and English.
About a month after booking we each received another email, in German only, with revised flight times for out first flight, now being 30 minutes later.  There was nothing highlighted on the email so we just thought it was simply a slightly later flight.
A week or so later I had the need to translate another email that had arrived for me, so put a translater on my laptop.  Something made me translate the Eurowings email.  Glad I did as in small print under the flight time it said that unfortunately the change of flight time meant that we would no longer be able to make the connecting flight so needed to contact them.
My friend who had paid for both of our bookings contacted Eurowings in Germany (expensive phone call).  They offered us flights either 3 days before or 4 days after, but could not fly us any more on that date.  My friend was going for an operation so we needed to be there on the date we'd booked to fly.  Eurowings said that as the flight had only been changed by 30 minutes they didn't have to refund us!  She explained that the booking was from Birmingham to Poland which they had said could no longer happen on the day booked, so Eurowings had broken the contract and thus we needed the refunds to book with another airline.  Eurowings asked us to put it in writing and they would consider it.
Over a month had passed and we'd heard nothing, so my friend went to Paypal who she had paid through.  On the same day they refunded my friends extra baggage upgrade that was paid for in a seperate transaction.
A week later they declined my refund, however later on the same day they refunded my friends booking!  So she went back to them and appealed.  Again Paypal refused the claim for my ticket as they said that the flight was only delayed.  After going through the appeal process anther 3 times she managed to speak to someone at Paypal, told them that the contract was to get from Brimingham to Poland on a specific day and that the email that whe had forwarded to them said that this was no longer possible, so the contract was broken, and also that Paypal had already refunded the other ticket.  They said they would look into it, but that was 10 days ago and still nothing more from Paypal.
Then last week I received and email, not from Eurowings but another German company thanking me for contacting Eurowings to let them know that due to Covid my travel plans had to change, and so on this occasion as a good will gesture they were giving me vouchers that I could use to fly with Eurowings at a later date!
At no point have I had change my plans, I have no intention of flying again (I'm only going as support due to my friend's operation) so will definitely not be using any vouchers.
Are they allowed to do this and weedle themselves out of refunding my ticket?
