What email program / client / [insertcorrecttermhere] do you use for desktop?

On the back of a recent thread here about WLM & Thunderbird I just wondered what do those here use. Nothing more than curiosity.

Like the chap in the thread I mentioned, I use Windows Live Mail still. He probably thought he was in a group of 1 but little did he know he's not the only one who is of the mind if it aint broke don't fix it. Does everything I need it to do even if I know most people are against it because it's out of date.

Have considered switching to something else to be fair. Looked at Thunderbird due to it being similar to WLM but never tried it. Considered Outlook although I tried it probably some 15-20 years ago & it put me off. Yes I know a lot will have changed in that time but just like owning 3 French cars & them all turning out to be nightmares, I now wont have a French car even though I'm sure there's plenty of ok ones out there, probably just not in my budget.

Oh and for the "I don't use a desktop program, I use Gmail app on my smartphone" lot .... this thread clearly isn't aimed at you then. :)

I use outlook, but have gmail as well - no issues with it.

None, I use the Gmail website.
Rarely use my personal Windows laptop so no need for an email programme.
Means I can check email easily on my work PC, phone, tablet or wherever else.

Use two applications on both mobile and laptop devices - Outlook for work as clients typically use Exchange and mandate its use plus enables me to shut it off out of hours/weekends etc and Apple Mail for personal/own business. With the additional privacy features that Apple offer such as disposable email addresses I've found non-Mail clients dont work as well with them.

    This.
    GMail website for GMail.
    Outlook.com website for Hotmail.

Haven't used a Windows email client for many years, but this is obviously easier due to choice of providers.

Whatever client you use, if you are relying on local storage/sorting of messages, make sure you have a robust backup strategy.

It would be concerning if anyone was still using POP3 these days... thankfully with IMAP, Exchange and other protocols the emails are not removed from the mail server simply by opening your mail client and so your backup strategy needs to be exactly the same as those using gmail.com etc

eM Client. There is a free version that allows the user two e-mail accounts but since I have more than that, I pay the price. I just prefer the layout/interface more than any other free or paid e-mail client that I've tried.

Agreed, which was why I included:

The correct name to insert is "Message User Agent" (see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_client ), or MUA for short (not to be confused with make up artist used on social media).

I use Mozilla Thunderbird.  I also have a French car (Renault Twingo, as it's the only newish cheap mass production four seater with the engine in the right place), despite 25 years ago saying I never would again after I had two that had a succession of failures in a relatively short time.

Hmm, did I buy them off you or did you buy them off me?? :-/

One concern I do have with using WLM, or anything like WLM, is the space that the emails take up on the hard drive. I have no idea how much space mine are taking up, whether it's a fair bit or not so much. I have a good few email addresses in WLM so who knows.

I've tried using the Gmail 'thing' in a web browser but I just hate the sorting and ordering of it all and it gets even worse on the app (which is why I use Samsung Email and when I was with Apple I used their stock email app).

I do like the appearance of the modern Outlook though so I'm curious enough to consider giving it a good go when I get my Windows 10 up and running which will hopefully be this week.

Though with that said, everything these days wants you to subscribe to their service rather than pay for their service and I detest subscription based anything and will avoid them unless it is literally the only option available. I don't know if the modern Outlook or Office is subscription based or how recent the most recent 'pay for' Office was.
I know you're supposed to be able to buy keys for various Microsoft products cheap enough but tbh I wouldn't know which one to be looking at.

The Office I have installed on this PC is 2010 it seems.
