Well CIFAS have gotten back to me already to say they have no data about me which is something.

I've emailed Monese about this decision but I'm not going to waste too much energy on it though.  They've pretty much said you can't have one, we're not going to tell you why and our decision is final.

That was amazingly quick. They used to take up to 2 weeks. Not that it helps you further. You could try Chase, they don't do hard credit checks, either. But they have ridiculous wait times of 3-5 weeks for new applications if you don't sail straight through, which must applicants don't seem to now. You do need a 64-bit smartphone for them, and a passport or picture driving licence. They are also licensed as a bank.

I think it was because I only gave them my current address as I've lived here for 12 years.   I've got address history going back about 30 years though which I could have provided.

I've applied to Chase but i'm currently in 'the waiting room' which isn't the end of the world as I don't get paid for a few more weeks so that might happen by then.   I've also opened an account with Wise as well which was fairly easy so I'll probably wait for the Chase one to fully open and work out which one is the best for me.

Wise are ok for money transfers but they aren't a bank, either.

Well I'm not looking for a 'bank' as such, just an account to pay bills from and my various recurring card payments for the likes of Netflix, YouTube e.t.c. at various worldwide locations.
  • Have you tried opening a basic bank account with a high street bank? My Son had one for a while when he couldn’t trust himself with money. His was with Santander but almost all high street banks do them

I don't have any trouble opening basic bank accounts on the high street.  The main reason I want one of the app-based banks is that they tend to offer fee-free foreign transactions and I have a number of those going out of my account each month.

I know we're only talking pennies in fees, but I'd rather the transactions be free if I can possible help it.

    Your other option is Chase.

The only problem is that they have a backlog of applications as a result of a very successful promotion that ended a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, I as I said a few posts up, I've applied to Chase and I'm currently in the queue waiting to be contacted.

Another takeaway from this, is that just because you didn't want to use Monzo at the time, you didn't have to close the account (I know some people like to keep things tidy).

Hah, welcome to my world :)

Keeping things 'tidy' has been the bane of my life in that respect.
It's the other way round with me, I hate seeing closed accounts on my credit files which sit there for 6 years before the drop. If I open an account that I will likely use in the future I'd leave it open rather than closing it so soon.
