Hairdresser ruined my hair

Please help/advise. I had fine hair with a patch of alopecia at the back. My hair has been like this for many years. Until I recently visited a Hair loss specialist' who gave me some extensions. (Expensive) however after 6weeks they have fallen out along with nearly all my hair!!! I am traumatized by this. I now have to wear a wig/topper I really am distraught. She is saying it's nothing to do with the extensions. I really don't know what to do??

Why you think it is to do with the extensions?
    Is it just the timing?

Hi, when it comes to hairdressers, you have rights Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, as explained in the following Citizens Advice link -

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/somethings-gone-wrong-with-a-purchase/complain-about-a-service/

See under 'what to say or write', where it talks about work done after 1 October 2015.

You could visit your GP in the first instance and ask for a referral to a proper specialist who can assess the damage to your hair and then take things forward to hopefully get a refund. Plus damages, as your mental health has been adversely affected by this incident. I guess it could be coincidental but it seems unlikely.
Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. Although I do carry out careful research before posting and never intend to mislead or supply out-of-date or incorrect information, please do not rely 100% on what you are reading. The first thing to establish is whether or not what she is saying is correct - i.e. did the extensions cause or contribute towards the hair loss.  I'd guess you'd need some kind of medical expert or something to tell this.

Then you'd need to establish if there was some kind of negligence involved (e.g. were they put in incorrectly, and/or should the person putting them in have known they might cause this to happen).  I don't know who could tell you this - other that a different hair-loss expert, or something like that.

Then, if you have determined that the extensions were the cause and there was negligence, and you wish to take things further, you'll need legal advice
  • With fine and/or thinning hair, extensions of any type should be gone into with extreme caution because of this very risk.

At the time of booking the appointment, aswell as during the consultation, and then right before going ahead with it, the stylist would have warned of the consequences as the process is intricate and potentially damaging to the existing hair.

If the hair had been permed or coloured over the past year even more damage would have been present too thus rendering extensions a very unwise choice.

With the hair and beauty industry so tightly regulated all of the above points would have been explained lest they be sued for ineptitude.

Make an appointment to speak with the owner of the business aswell as the stylist/technician and talk this through, their name and reputation is at stake and no-one will want this to go unresolved.

I think OP need to clarify exactly where this "Hair loss specialist" was.

Was it as specialist company, or just some hairdresser who might have been on a course?

They lasted 6 weeks so not sure how you can blame the hairdresser

With alopecia surely it would point to this.
  • @Suebrit how have you progressed this ??

Does sound like the alopecia has extended further and is the likely root cause of the hair loss.

It may have happened naturally regardless of the extensions.

But my hair has been exactly the same for over 20 yrs, with no further progression. Bit of a coincidence that it should suddenly all fall out now.
