Selling Gold Jewellery

Hi - I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I have some old gold jewellery and wondered if it was worth selling and if this is best to sell online or via gold buyer (we have a local antique dealer who buys gold but haven't asked for a price yet)
Would anyone recommend any of the online "cash for gold" type buyers??

I seem to remember many people use Hatton garden metals unless another hatton garden gold buyer exists with a similar name ?
They used to have a thread which looked at the time like it was sponsored by them as most posts were first time posters.
Perhaps do a search on here .0 -
If you have scales that will weigh it to a fraction of a gram and are prepared to check the hallmarks for purity and do some calculations you can work out what the current bullion value is and then compare this with what the local dealer will offer. If the values are close it might be simplest to go local.

Several years ago i sold a lot of gold jewellery that wasn't being used, it was a mix of modern and antique - i tried an auction house and a local jewellers that bought gold - the return i got via the auction house was dismal whereas the gold jewellers were the opposite.
I would only go that route now - i have some that i've not got around to sorting out properly but when i do it'll be that.0 -
If it is gold, then it will definitely be worth selling.
I'd check out some local places.
There is a jeweller about 12 miles from me who is offering a higher price for 9/14/18/22 carat gold than the ones who want you to post your gold to them.
I recently took a couple of pieces of gold (UK hallmarked and good weights) to a local social club in response to a leaflet I got through the door from a company offering to buy gold.
I knew everything about the hallmarks (I have a jeweller's loupe) and the exact weight (I have jeweller's scales).
I must have looked a bit dim to him as the initial price he offered was laughable. I did actually laugh.
He upped his offer several times, then I showed him this jeweller's website and the prices they were offering.
He blinked a bit and came closer to their price but said he needed to make some profit and I pointed out that this jeweller must be making some profit with the prices they were offering because they wouldn't do it otherwise.
He'd put my back up by the miserly offer he'd given me originally.
He was just greedy. It was clear to me that he hoped that people who were clueless about the price of gold would just accept his offer.
He didn't get my gold.

Pollycat, which is the best website to keep an eye on for gold prices? I want to keep an eye on them on regular basis and hopefully when they are going up, I can take my gold to the jeweller as the prices would vary daily.
As it happens I sold 2 pieces of my jewellery only 3 days ago, and using my kitchen scales, I worked out that I got £36 per gm. Not sure if that is good or not but I decided to try as for years I have been thinking but not taking any action.
My gold is not hallmarked, it is mostly bought in a different country in the 1970's prior to coming to UK. I still have more to sell and will do it bit by bit. I need to keep on top of the gold selling prices.0 -
Hi Kalsha
This is the website mentioned above:
Sell Gold - 9ct, 18ct, 24ct - top rated service (hattongardenmetals.com)
They are offering £16.03 per gram for 9 carat gold.
This is the local-ish jeweller I keep an eye on (she appears on The Real Deal and Bling).
The Chapel Jewellers, Cash for Gold Sheffield. Sell Gold
They are offering £17.23 per gram for 9 carat gold.
They also offer more for special chains/bracelets.
I have used this place before.
£36.00 per gram would indicate a very good price for 18 carat or not-so-good for 22 carat.
Even if your gold doesn't have a UK hallmark, it might be marked in some way.
I've bought 18 carat gold from India and Sri Lanka and it is either marked 18k or 750 (i.e. 750/1000 parts of pure gold which is 24 carat).
14 carat from Turkey is marked 14k or 585 (585/1000 parts of pure gold).

Thank you for that info. Will keep an eye on the prices. Mine would have been 22 carat. I did not shop around, just went to this jeweller who has been recommended on other groups that I belong to. she did say it was not totally pure and was like 21 carat. I just wanted to make a start somewhere - from now on I will be checking on fluctuations in price and maybe if time will allow me, compare quotes from a few jewellers on the same day.0

Can I ask at what rate they paid you - per gram? And did you visit a few jewellers to compare or just went to the one?0
