Renewing driving licence

I've never bothered returning my old licence when it comes time to renew - and never been invited to spend a few nights with "Mr. Big" at Her Majesty's pleasure
I guess if they ever did kick up a stink, what's to stop you saying "Well I sent it off, it must have got lost in the post" ? No-one could prove it one way or another, since there's no requirement to send it "registered", "tracked", "signed-for", whatever the correct terminology is.0 -

That's quite true. But if a case did reach court (though the chances of that are as close to zero as you can imagine) the burden would be on you to prove you posted it. You can do this by getting a free certificate of posting from the Post Office. This itself is not entirely foolproof as you could post an empty envelope, so a video of you putting it in the envelope may help. But then you could take a different envelope to the PO so you could keep the video running until you handed it over (this is getting silly!

Lol, the last 2 posts.I suspect 'the system' is like the bookies - never losing. So if you did play that game then they'd just say no problem just pay us this penalty price then.I'll just leave it in my card wallet. There's enough slots with all the bank cards I've got in there. If it becomes a problem then they can have it, otherwise it'll just stay there until I next have a clear out.0

Is it even an offence not to return the old licence? Seems unlikely.TooManyPoints said:No-one could prove it one way or another, since there's no requirement to send it "registered", "tracked", "signed-for", whatever the correct terminology is.But if a case did reach court0 -

I think that's why TMP said "if".

There's a difference between things which are offences but don't in practice reach court because they're too trivial for anybody to be prosecuted, and things which don't reach court because they're not even offences in the first place...JustAnotherSaver said:user1977 said:

My 10 year photocard expired last year and I just ticked the box to say it was lost (it's not, I still have it) and no other action was taken. Same 10 years previously.0
