When to apply for new broadband supplier

Options
My contract ends on the 29th of June. I plan on moving to another supplier, when can I apply to leave and avoid early exit fees. Can I set a ,no sooner than, date with the new provider?

You can apply whenever you like.
Exit fees are normally pro-rata to the end date so by this point they'll be less than the monthly equivalent.
It's not always possible to specify a specific date but if you aim for a 17 day timescale it won't be too far away.

Note that if you leave the provider, say, on July 1 for example but you've already paid them for the period June 29 to July 28 you'll get a pro-rata refund for those 28 days.

If you set your new broadband with another provider for a switch the next day after the contract ends, that should end the old one on the day itself. Any charges paid to the old supplier in advance should be refunded pro rata. If you are signing up for FTTP with a new provider and need to end an FTTC service with an old provider, probably best to notify the old provider that you wish to end the contract from the last day of service.

And yes, you usually can set a no sooner than date with a new provider.

Update if anyone's interested. Applied today to move from Talk Talk to Shell. No option to choose a date when applying but received a quick acknowledgement from Shell then very soon after received a message from Talk Talk stating,
    What happens next?
If you'd like to stay or learn more about your options,
call us for free from your TalkTalk landline on 0345 172 0078
or click below to Live Chat with us.

If you're sure about leaving, you don't have to do anything.
We'll send you a letter with all the information you need and
your switch will go through automatically on 12 July 2022.
You should receive your final bill within 10 days of your service
    ending on 12 July 2022.

My Talk Talk contract ends on the 29th of June so its nice to know that the change will be outside the contract and the change date.

Re the FTTC -> FTTP move. I've just done that in the last month of my contract with Plusnet (moving to BT). I waited until it was up and running before cancelling. Fortunately with Plusnet there is only a 14 day notice period and I had 16 days left on the contract so don't have to pay anything at the out of contract rate. However, to just give the 14 days notice and end it 2 days early, they would have charged me £89!

Remember to check your current provider for any notice period requirements!

It seems to me 14 days notice is the norm for broadband cancellation and 30 days if you have a TV contract ie Sky packaged deal.
Just been through my contract with Sky, 14 and 30 days respectively for BB and TV.
