'Extraordinary circumstances' - Easy Jet

I was due to fly from Edinburgh to LGW at 17.55 however EasyJet cancelled the flight.
There wasn't any other flights from themselves departing that day so I booked a flight with BA arriving at LHR.
Easy Jet are citing 'air traffic control restrictions' as a reason as to why this is an extraordinary circumstance.
My question
1. The Civil Aviation Authority lists flights to LHR that have been cancelled due to air traffic control; I can't seem to find any for LGW. Does anyone know if they do in order to check?
2. Given there was no suitable alternative on the same day will EasyJet pay for my BA flights? Do I have any rights? I've seen airlines should put you on rival flights however I don't know if they will use this air traffic control restrictions as an excuse.
Do I have any way to get the money back for the BA flights?

If an airline cancels a flight are entitled to EITHER a refund OR an alternative flight whatever the reason it was cancelled .
If Easyjet did not offer an alternative flight - you are entitled to ask them to book the alternative flight with another airline for you .You can find more information in the flight cancellation section here :https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/flight-delays/
Depending on the reason it was cancelled you may be able to claim compensation in addition.0
