It’s probably more about being careful not to contradict the reasons you get the disability benefit. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.2 -

If you go aim for 28 days a delay of only a few hours could mean that your flight ends up arriving the next day which would be enough to break the rules.
As mentioned earlier I can't remember whether days of departure from and arrival in the UK count as days in the UK or days overseas (nor can I remember if the days for HB and ESA differ).Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1 -

Which given their spending should be more than enough for their trips.

I get they are in supported living and have health issues for which benefits are paid. But if they are travelling as much as they claim, then this is not what benefits is for.
I disagree. There's no rules on what exactly you can spend your money on, you can spend on exactly what you want.
I work long hours in often complex environments and appreciate if I hadn't been able to get away for a few days when required (and often at short notice), I'd have had a mental breakdown long before now.
Travel can be very good to mental health, offering OP a pathway to benefit their future.💙💛 💔2 -

There is no flexibility in certain benefit rules as many found out in March 2020. It definitely wouldn't be in your interests to fall foul of this.💙💛 💔0 -
https://england.shelter.org.uk/professional_resources/legal/benefits/housing_benefit/housing_benefit_during_temporary_absences_from_home#title-3Absence up to four weeksI can’t find the guidance on which days are counted for ESA.
A claimant (or household member) will not be treated as occupying the home if they are temporarily absent from GB for a period exceeding four weeks. When calculating the period of absence, the day of departure from GB is taken into account and the day of return is disregarded.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. I’ve only been delayed once for 24 hours in 30 years.
people have been delayed a lot longer but I don’t think you should live you live on the basis of a edge case of volcanic ash, so it’s a sensible trade off that would work unless you are very unlucky and if it happens you’ll have to deal with it.
