I just travelled 400+ miles by train with a tatty printout of a QR code I was sent, plus I had an email with the ticket's QR code on my phone.
Ended up on a train full of passengers from 2 previous cancelled ones.Absolutely rammed; too crowded to open the catering section, but also nobody checking tickets before, during or after.the journey.
To be honest, everybody was so relieved to be moving that they were all good-natured about everything.

  • Can you not just buy the tickets and have them collect them at the station?

I think you have to produce the credit/debit card used for the purchase......

Does this work if the card is in a different name?

I used to order tickets for people all the time at work.  I'd do the ordering using a manager's card and a different colleague could pick them up at the train station.  Any card will do.  But then again in 4 years a card has never been needed so not a problem.

I found this paragraph on the Trainline website."
    • Self-service ticket machine - collection is available from any one of the 1,700 ticket machines in stations across the UK. This is where you use a collection reference number and a debit/credit card to access your tickets and print them. Sometimes you’ll be given the option to collect tickets with any debit/credit card and not necessarily the one which was used in payment. It’s worth checking if this option is available to you on the delivery options screen when you’re booking. If you pay for your tickets using PayPal or Apple Pay then collection with any type of card is guaranteed.
