New TV only lasted 14 months

I purchased a new Philips tv from argos in March 2021 and incredibly after very little use it has developed a range of faults including the tuner no longer working at all and the unit no longer responding to input and the built in apps have become corrupted.  It seems there is also some kind of software fault. I have never had this issue before with a new TV. I contacted argos and explained to them how dissapointed I was that the TV only lasted 14 months but they said I would not be entitled to a replacement or a refund because it is just two months of of warranty. I asked to speak with a manager on the phone but was flatly denied this  request. I am now left with a £450 hunk of junk still in new condition and I am doubtful Philips will help as I had not registered the TV with them until now.

Tell Argos you are claiming under the consumer rights act, not the warranty. It’s reasonable to expect a tv of that price to last longer than 14 months.

As the TV is over six months old you'll probably have to get an independent report done to identify the fault.

I’d expect a modern tv to last nearer to 14 years not 14 months. We bought an LG. at a knockdown  price as it was ex display in Makro about 15 years ago.  It’s still as good as it was back then.

I agree with the above, we purchased a Yale DIY alarm which went faulty just 2 months after the warranty expired, I contacted YALE quoting the consumer right act and HeyHo a replacement alarm unit was sent out to us a few days later.

Had you bought it direct from Yale?  If not they had no responsibility under the CRA and probably were just showing goodwill.

I think you're being very generous there.

I'd expect a "modern" TV in the £4-500 range to last 6-7 years, and that's being generous.

The previous tv to this lasted 20 years.  It was a Sony.  Maybe I’ve just been very lucky

You’re comparing apples with pears.  A Sony TV from 1988 would have been a CRT, probably a Trinitron.  Very reliable and many still running perfectly ok today and still fetching respectable 2nd hand prices, particularly with the resurgence of retro gaming.

@longjohnjohnson did state “modern” TVs in a particular price range, which you can’t compare as a like for like to a 34 year old Sony CRT.
