I recently switched my current account from NatWest to Nationwide, but my credit card is still with NatWest.
I tried using Nationwide's online banking to pay off the card, but it only seems to accept payments to bank accounts.  Even though I select "Your own account or card" in the single payment drop-down menu, it doesn't allow card details to be entered.
Am I missing something?

The banking details that you need for the NatWest credit card in order to make payments are on your credit card statements. You need to set up a new payment or set up a Direct Debit from the credit card online page.

You set it up to pay a bill, not to pay yourself. You'll need to enter the right sort code and account number, which you'll find on the back of your NatWest credit card statement.  Your credit card number is the reference for the payment.

The direct debit I set up through NatWest online banking apparently only applies to the next statement, not the current one.  Which is why I need to pay it another way.

I can only enter an 8 digit account number for payments through Nationwide online banking.  There isn't an 8 digit number on the statement, which is why I'm here asking for help.

    Thanks.
The statement I was using was an online statement (I've been online-only for a while) and they don't have the account number.  Luckily, I still have some old paper statements which do have the account number.

Can you go into the Natwest app, select the credit card account and choose the option to make a payment? You then put the Nationwide bank or debit card details.

Yes, that several banks use similar language but mean "your own account or card that you hold with us not someone else". To push the monies from your current account you'll need to select to pay a third party and then ultimately choose a NatWest credit card.

Personally think a pull payment is better and so go into your NatWest app and choose to pay the credit card by a debit card payment. These days most banks consider the payment made once you give the details whereas a push payment from your current account only lands when the funds are cleared in your credit card company's account.

I'm of the opposite view; not all card issuers accept debit card payments & also they can get declined etc.

Faster Payment/ bill payment is usually a better option. From a practical perspective, they usually arrive as cleared funds in seconds.
  • Hi @ThatGuy11200 - if you're still looking for how to do this - make the payment from your Nationwide account as follows:

Sort code: appears on your NatWest statement on the "Bank Giro Credit" slip.
    Account number: 00000000
Reference: Your 16 digit NatWest credit card number

It might be best to send £1 first to ensure the money arrives in your NatWest credit card account (the payment is usually visible under pending transactions after a matter of hours) - and once you're happy that it's arrived, pay the rest.

Thanks.  I found the info on the back of the old paper statement, so I was able to pay it.  The payment cleared yesterday, so it's all fine now.

This. Actually I'm pretty sure NatWest are one of those credit card issuers that don't accept debit card payments at all.
