Just tell him the cost of each option, including any petrol you want him to cover, and let him take his pick.

Simple! All you had to do was ask him.

Plus when he finds you’ve bought him a second hand one, he might just tell to you take it straight back again

There's nothing to say the onlne marketplace one is second hand.

I think you and your brother need to sit down and talk, the fact that you're considering defrauding him for a moderate amount of money makes me concerned for you. If you are seriously considering this and this is not just a made up dilemma, I would also suggest that you consult a Financial guide to discuss your money situation with them. Times are tight for all of us right now and there's no shame in seeking advice or in turning down your Brother's request for help if you cannot afford to drive it to him. Tell your Brother about the Marketplace advert, refund any monies already given and please, consider calling CAP who would be very happy to help you x

He's your brother. Who know's what the future brings. The world is full of people with regret about stupid disagreements about minor things. Tell him about the deal if he wants it to save some money, forget about the fuel whatever (if you want to be cheeky tell him he owes you a good night out next time your together). In X many years time if you or he go through some real crisis (health, family, job, significant money etc.) do you want a mate, or do you want someone you do paid errands for?

    NO, NO and also NO.

Get him what he wants and take it to him. If you really don't want to, tell him that. But don't be deceptive and mean.

It could be that when you turn up he'll give you not just the cost of the cupboard but also a meal and also some cash for your petrol money. If he doesn't, so be it. But no, please don't be mean with relatives, especially close ones.

(My qualifications: I also have a brother.)

95% of these dilemmas could remain unpublished if people just talked to each other.
95% (or more) are made up.
You know this for a true fact? If so, how so?

Ask him to contribute to your petrol. The other idea is just awful.

I would only buy the cheaper marketplace one after asking your brother with the intention of saving him money. I would also explain that it’s 50 miles for you and he needs to cover your cost, just be honest.

Driving the 50 miles to his house and back is going to cost more than the 40 pounds delivery charge if you take into account depreciation, fuel cost, insurance etc.

If it was me I would tell him about the cheaper online cupboard.... we all like a bargain in these tough times and then wait till you both meet up to give it to him. His original idea is cheapskate mixed with stupidity. Yours is downright deceptive
