Heatpump - Replacement cost?

Say you have the necessary piping for either an ASHP or a GSHP. Say, also that the actual heat pump breaks and you need to replace it. What percentage of the overall costs are the heat pump itself, as part of the initial installation?

That'd be good to know, because it means potentially knowing that you need to save up a bit more "just in case"

Well, you can buy a complete 8.5kW Ecodan for around £4000, so I'd guess that's a cap on the parts cost for any repair:

    2.72kWp PV facing SSW installed Jan 2012. 11 x 247w panels, 3.6kw inverter. 33MWh generated, long-term average 2.6 Os.

In the whole great scheme of things an Air Source HeatPump is probably only 2-3 time the cost of a gas boiler but for some reason they do command a premium that's a lot greater than the sum of the parts.

Possibly because of  the MCS scheme, the fact that there's a grant or previously the RHI and all the other stuff. Hopefully the costs will reduce as they become more widely available and there will be more expertise around to install and maintain them.

Much the same way as Solar Voltaic prices dropped when all the grants reduced and dried up (just me being a bit cynical but I do think that grants tend to increase the prices rather than make stuff cheaper)

    Ah,

So roughly half? Would a GSHP typically cost about 15K to replace then if the initial installation is 30K?

Very unlikely. A lot of the extra cost of a GSHP is the underground bit, which shouldn't go wrong.
The actual mechanism is a similar cost to an ASHP.

Thanks. I guess it's the actual mechanism where you get the COP from too?

my ASHP is 12 years old now not sure how long it will last. I do have an issue with it but because it’s an old model virtually no one knows how to service it some guy in South Wales might apparently . And it’s a split unit and if the outdoor unit needs replacing the new model is not compatible with the indoor unit so both would need replacing .
8kw system spread over 6 roofs , surrounded by trees and in a valley.

FWIW, when I do get one, I'll probably end up going for a heat geek certified person as they've got a lot of installers up and down the country, the place I'm buying is fairly central (to the north of England)

It'd be great if there was a lot more training available for new apprentices tbh, outside of private training companies like Heat Geek on how to design the system, for maximum efficiency.

I also understand where they're coming from, coming from a different engineering background. Any boiler technician can in theory put in a HP but knowing how to fine tune it, is another skill entirely.

Similarly, for myself, any infrastructure person can plonk in any kind of network, but fine tuning it for the likes of security, quality of service, that sorta thing, that falls on us

My impression of Heat Geek is that they are a bit OTT.  I would rather an installer who can think for themselves than one who takes everything Heat Geek says as gospel.

Maybe but then I come from an industry where I've basically been given the old Cisco indoctrination.

It's always good to have best practices imo

Cisco has quite a track record, Heat Geek has a big online presence; that's not the same thing.
