we buy a card from the office, £20 or £50, that goes into a meter in our shed that is then credited with that amount, the rate is set by and owned by the estate
Yes but what is the rate you are actually paying and does it include any form of standing charge? Landlords / site owners are not allowed to make a profit selling electricity so assuming they aren't I am just interested in what their commercial rates are and whether you guys are paying through the nose anyway.

My dad used to own a small caravan park and would give the residents a copy of the paperwork from his energy company, showing the rates so the unit owners knew they weren't being ripped off.

I'm not suggesting the owner is ripping anyone off, but if they have a commercial tariff (they should) the chances are they are paying a lot more per kWh than a domestic customer. Commercial energy is not regulated like domestic is.

You don't think the Queen nips to the meter to bung another 50p in?
I'd expect she has a servant who does that for her ;)

Chris, that's exactly why my dad put a copy of his charges in with the van owners leccy bills. They might compare unit charges to what they paid back home and think he was profiting but that meant they could see what he had to pay.

Some people think such businesses are profiting when in actual fact they are simply charging for the additional overhead of providing such a service such as the administration/payment mechanics. Some do this themselves and others just outsource the work. This is how some EV charge points work in some flats as they are sometimes run off communal electric rather than tied to a particular flat - which can also make the installation simpler/cheaper as a result.
