Hello ….

I’m not sure if this is the best forum to post in - but I need your over 50s experience & knowledge.

My father is 98 and can no longer walk - we are moving his bedroom downstairs so he isn’t isolated upstairs.

To accommodate this move I was thinking of buildings wetroom in my garage - but then I wondered if anyone knew of a company that made wetrooms - which I could just add on to my house - like an extension?

Like a short of portable wetroom that comes on the back of a lorry - which I then put in my back garden with access through the patio sliding doors.

Or possibly. just place in my front garden (my neighbours will be delighted) and put an access door in where our bay windows are.

Any thoughts welcome.

An extension will need planning permission I think.  Even if it's prebuilt.

Can't help with any suppliers - it's an interesting idea though.  I did wonder if there was anything like a drive in people wash when we were having issues getting MiL properly showered.  Not everyone can or wants to convert a perfectly good washroom that a family might have to something tailored specifically for someone with little mobility.

In my mind I was think more along the lines of a portal box like they have at festivals - or a portaloo .. but in this case it’s a wetroom.

I do like the idea of a wet room in kit form to just place in the garage -  electric is generally no problem I should think but water ?

Mine would be easy  - an integral garage -  the electric , gas and water meters are all there.

We have water and electricity in the garage so it shouldn’t be to difficult to connect services - drainage should also be possible.

I’m sure someone must make such an easily added room & deliver them.
  • Perhaps you should check with the local council. It might need building regulations approval.

It would certainly be safest to assume this. However, I don't think that it's always true. My sister and her then husband had their kitchen extended into the garden. As I recall it, they didn't need planning permission because the extension didn't exceed a certain size. (I'm not sure whether it was the absolute size or size as a proportion of the original structure.) To be fair, that was 40 years ago, and things might well have changed since then.

I think that the best thing to do would be to check with the local planning authority.

Alongside Brie's find, we once stayed in a Qbic hotel, Google that and you'll find an article in the telegraph about the Qbi, which is a pod: you put multiples into a larger space, and hey presto you have a hotel.

The ensuite was a box within the bedroom box.

That sort of thing would have the advantage of being removable if you didn't want it long term. Issues you might face would be making it a warm enough space to encourage the removal of clothes.

You may also be able to find a bathing service: a day centre with a range of activities, including assisted bathing. That might also benefit the isolation, meeting people who aren't family.
Signature removed for peace of mind

Thank you - I think there’s a good chance no planning permission will be needed - but I will check before I start.

There’s also an adaption grant which I might be able to get from the Council.
