need to cancel sky

my mum has sky basic with Internet and phone,  it's now become too expensive to run and we are looking at alternatives.
we have already upped her mobile to take the phone anytime away but we need a new TV service.   sky has always been easy to use and she records alot so wants to be able to do that still.   we were looking at now tv but it says it can't record

any ideas

It will depend on why she had sky - sports?  movies? events?  That way people will know what to recommend.

for just movies and documentaries Netflix is good.  I think the basic package on that is £7.99 a month for one TV.  No need to record as things are available for a long time, months even.

BBC iPlayer is free assuming she has a TV license but I don't find it very useful myself.

We also have Freesat which gives us a stupidly huge range of stations and from which we can record anything.  I keep telling the OH that it doesn't work for KPop but I'm not believed for some reason.

she mainly watches dramas but they do clash alot and they are mainly on itv , bbc and sky Atlantic.     is there a recordable free view box so she can record the normal stuff and then just use now tv as a streaming service

Yes you can buy a freeview box that records, but why would you when all 5 terrestrial channels have an online catch up facility? More 4 is good as it also includes films. If it is mostly itv and bbc dramas that are not on itv hub or iplayer, then there is the subscription service Britbox, which is a joint venture between bbc and itv. It has a free period (try before you buy), so your mum can see if it suits her. None of the suggestions here will give her sky atlantic for free.

she is willing to pay for sky Atlantic just not what they charge.   now tv she can get it for 9.99,   she is paying £47 because of multiroom so with now tv she doesn't need that.   she is 78 and likes to record stuff so she has a list of what she likes,  so it just needs to be recordable so it's easy to use for her

I think you will struggle to record Sky Atlantic outside of Sky HD/Q/Glass.

But with On demand via Now TV, isn't recording moot?

As is actually the case for most TV, aside from the few things with special broadcast rights, which are mostly sport

I'm not sure how it works,  are all the channels including itv and bbc on demand.   she records things like the repair shop
and sometimes quiz shows etc,   she's old and it's getting her used to something new when she has used sky for years

I presume the sky Atlantic on now tv is just like netflix which she has used

On demand is basically that - you can watch an episode of Coronation Street/Pointless at any point after its been aired, not at whatever times ITV/ITV2 decide to repeat it.  So if you want to see the latest episodes at 3 in the morning, there you go, no need to tape it.

Sky Atlantic on Now has the live stream of the channel, but you can't record it.  Now is basically built around on-demand with some live TV streams.  Yes its significantly cheaper but you lose out on the recording ability and receive a relatively clunky interface .

Also can't record anything with Glass, its basically Now in new packaging and a higher price tag.

If you can convince  her and explain to her how streaming works she can save lots of money all the main UK tv stations have a catch up situation.

Put your cancellation in with Sky and you may be able to negotiate a far cheaper deal for her and she can then stay. Remember she needs the internet, so Now broadband and entertainment can be had for £25.99 per month. With sky direct could well be £22 internet and £16 signature on retention deal.
