The John Lewis card can be paid by debit card. I found it impossible to pay online by debit card for a few months at the end of last year and the beginning of this year as there seemed to be problems with SCA. So I had to pay over the phone. Paying on the website has not been a problem for the last few months.
However that is now moot. As John Lewis is dropping HSBC and getting Newday to be the credit provider for their cards. Also they are not accepting applications now until the switch to Newday is complete.

For Barclaycard, I think it must depend on the card as to what payment methods are accepted.

I have two Barclaycards - Forward and Hilton Honors.  The 'ways to pay' the Forward card are direct debit, bank transfer, QR code (via Pingit or at an ATM), or debit card.  For the Hilton Honors card, they're direct debit, bank transfer, QR code, debit card, cash or cheque at a bank, or cheque in the post.
