electric usage too high
posting on another thread it seems my usage is too high, we have a 4 bed detatched house , we have a lizard with a heat lamp and an antiquated boiler which needs 4 hours to run to get a full tank of water, i will be talking to my landlord, also 4 gamers and a hell of lot of gadgets it seems
my latest meter reading seems to be 20kwh per day
im at home for half the day and i love my tea but im careful with how much i put in the kettle and i do one load of washing per day.

Why does your Lizard have a boiler?3

It won't be your landlords concern the boiler unless the property isn't at least an EPC grade E.
The best thing you can do is not heat the whole tank and everyone has showers for a set time.
Try and get everyone involved in energy saving and turn everything off standby.
Start with those then look for other ways to save money.1 -
I'm still going to ask, my last landlord was great with things like that so hope this one is too, to even get to where its hot we need 3 and half to 4 hours or it stays a shade cooler than lukewarm.Mstty said:It won't be your landlords concern the boiler unless the property isn't at least an EPC grade E.

Are you looking for advice on cutting energy usage? The Energy Savings Trust has lots of advice, including for renters - apparently I can't post a link but try:'energysavingtrust.org.uk/how-to-save-energy-and-money-if-you-rent-your-home'Unfortunately, your lizard may be costing you a lot.

What's the wattage of that lamp? Not that you can do anything about it, but it would be helpful to understand how much of your bill is down to that lamp being on 24/7.squizz11 said:posting on another thread it seems my usage is too high, we have a 4 bed detatched house , we have a lizard with a heat lamp and an antiquated boiler which needs 4 hours to run to get a full tank of water, i will be talking to my landlord, also 4 gamers and a hell of lot of gadgets it seems

As advised above, you and the family need to take collective action to reduce consumption. Assuming your readings are correct, reducing use is the only way to get your bills down.0 -
Stop your lizard from using the boiler, most lizards do not have a boiler.
On a more serious point, LED lights have been developed to overcome the old problem of bulbs which was they produced more heat than light, where as a heat lamp needs the opposite? so needs an element that works at a wavelength that emits virtually no light?0 -
Is the boiler a tank with electric immersion heater? How big is the tank (how often do you run out of hot water) and can you look up the wattage of the immersion heater? Taking a long time to heat up may just be a not very powerful immersion heater (which will cost less to run per hour so add up to the same cost in the end) or could be a big tank and heating more water than you need. Good tank insulation helps too and isn't usually hugely expensive.

If your in hard water area and or its an old the tank coil could be badly blocked up, I even wonder if it may be cheaper to heat it with electric, you would have to measure the Gas usage to compare it too, But try getting the tank flushed or replaced. If you have Xbox / PlayStations check the power setting that they go to sleep after being left for 30min.0

If you're looking for energy saving advice then the reducing the amount of time that gaming PCs/consoles and other gadgets are used the obvious one, as is looking at energy wasted by electrical devices plugged in but not in use.squizz11 said:also 4 gamers and a hell of lot of gadgets it seems0
