You're not the only one obsessed with 'how low can we go'.
One success is, since getting into the habit of switching off all plugs at the socket, my hubby watches far less random TV. He used to turn it on whenever he came in the living room, just as a background noise really. Now the set top box takes a couple of minutes to 'wake up' he can't be bothered and the TV only goes on in the evenings

It’s so easy to have the TV on in the background isn’t it and not even be watching it.I noticed Tuesday we binged a box set in the evening and it had a noticeable impact on our electric usage.0

Are you sure it was the TV? A modern 65" OLED TV would use around 120 watts, so 0.12 kW per hour, you would need to watch eight hours of TV to use a kWh. Even older less efficient technology (LED/LCD) is unlikely to use significant amounts of electricity.Mrs_F_2017 said:It’s so easy to have the TV on in the background isn’t it and not even be watching it.I noticed Tuesday we binged a box set in the evening and it had a noticeable impact on our electric usage.0 -

@MattMattMattUK that was my assumption based on the fact that nothing else was different in our consumption pattern.
Here’s my bright data the week and for Tuesday in particular.0 -
Do you have a sound system with your TV? Found ours was using more power than the TV and ditched it. It was some massive Bose box thingy we inherited from the previous occupiers though, wired up to speakers on the walls.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

@Alnat1 nope - no sound system. It doesn’t receive traditional TV though - we use all streaming apps via a PlayStation so maybe that’s the reason?0

Overall though we’re pretty low users I think and I think if I banned the TV my husband would not be that impressed 🙈0

I have seen somewhere on these forums that gaming consoles do use a lot of electricity, even on standby. Probably explains it.
You can buy a gadget for about a tenner that plugs in to the wall then you plug in any device. Will show in both w and kWh usage of whatever gets plugged in.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

We don’t ever leave it on standby. It’s turned off properly when not in use.Maybe time to turn off at the mains too and see what difference that makes!0

Will be re-doing my forecast for the year in light of the new announcements today of the £400 grant. We were ineligible for the counc tax rebate (in our three bedroom, mid-terrace) and I’d basically ignored the £200 previously as it had to be repaid so wasn’t factoring it in.0
