If someone has recently gone bankrupt but since then has had council tax and utilities building up as well as credit cards.

if they can’t go bankrupt again for a year after they have been discharged then what can they do when bailiffs keep calling?

council tax debt is thousands now and pre pay meters have been fitted but they take the debt off everytime top up.

are there any emergency government help they can apply for?

am curious to know how person in question is (still) spending on credit cards if they recently went bankrupt?

And also, how the council tax debt is thousands already if the bankruptcy is recent? (Unless you mean they are getting in a tears again on top of thousands worth of CT debt already included in the bankruptcy).

I would suggest speaking to National Debtline (https://www.nationaldebtline.org) or the Citizens Advice Bureau (https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk) who will be able to advise.

How does a recently discharged bankrupt have a credit card?  They should not qualify for one.  It is also difficult to appreciate how Council Tax and utilities are also at the point where there are debts that have gone to collection.

Bankruptcy includes the present year council tax - which is why it's worth delaying it till April.

Likewise any arrears of gas and electricity should have been wiped at the date of bankruptcy.

Yes there is help available from energy trusts and there are s13 council tax write-offs for genuine hardship (in theory)

Can you give us some more details, and figures if possible. Ideally post a statement of affairs to avoid a drip-feed of us asking for information.

Your post is quite confusing, because as fatbelly says, any utility and CT arrears, including the current years debts, are vested in the bankruptcy, so there shouldn`t be any to need help with.

Think you need to clarify one or two things here.

@danjackson2021 is this you or are you posting for someone else again?
If it’s not you it would be a lot simpler if whoever this is created their own account and asks/answers  the questions themselves.

You’ve previously referenced a company bankruptcy and a DRO. You/they/whoever risks being given wrong advice if you’re not giving the full picture.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

These are new areas since the last bankruptcy

m it’s only about £2K council tax and about £3K utilities

the utilities are threatening to fit prepay meters but everytime they try to get access they have been refused by the debtor

they can’t switch off the entire street so there is nothing they can do unless they can get access to fit the prepay meters

for the council tax the collection company is threatening prison but that’s a 😂
  • I accept that it looks like that but if you read it very carefully then it's just fear tactics.

if you don't pay then they'll "...refer your case back to..." the council and the council "...may take any of the following actions..."

"This matter is extremely serious" 😂

Surely that's a matter of opinion? some may think it's extremely serious whilst many others would disagree.

I wonder how many people are currently in prison for council tax and how many have been jailed over the years.

I'll bet there's at least one fatal error they all made.

According to this, about 100 people a year. Plus the others who have their commital suspended. Not so much of a joke for those who do get sent down for deliberate non-payment.

    https://www.crimeandjustice.org.uk/resources/decriminalising-non-payment-tv-licences-and-council-tax

And the utility company can get a court order to fit a prepayment meter if they need to.

*Throwing more money at the problem won't help because it seems as if no lessons have been learned by someone.

Someone could do worse than contact StepChange or one of the agencies mentioned by Sonic101, above. All three offer their services free of charge. And they know what they are talking about.
