Skype offer calls to North America landlines and mobiles for 6.00 a month with first month free - a bit dearer than Rebtel, but you can do 1 month free and test quality of calls.

Many thanks for the tip about Lebara from mgfvvc. I have just switched to Lebara this week and am going to give it a go. If it works well, and depending on how long the minutes last over the course of a month, I might drop the Rebtel subscription. I've used Rebtel a couple of times so far and it's reasonably ok - the line quality hasn't seemed the best but it does work. 

The only catch I've had so far with the change in arrangements relates to an increase in my broadband costs as I was with Vodafone for my mobile and broadband which saved me a couple of pounds a month.

Having now gone to Lebara for my phone, I've found my broadband plan has increased a little bit.

At the moment, the Lebara fee (2.99 a month) plus Rebtel (4 a month) plus Vodafone broadband (now 25.24 a month) is still less than what I was paying Vodafone for my phone and broadband before I changed to Lebara (22.24 for broadband and 11.25 for phone) - but that Vodafone package didn't include overseas minutes so I had to pay separately for them every time I rang my friend which was adding at least another 10 a month to the bill.

My 2 year Vodafone broadband contract ends this September and I am going to start looking around to see whether what they charge me for broadband is the best deal I can get.

Really appreciate all the tips from folks - it's been very helpful.

Also check out Planet Numbers https://planet-numbers.co.uk/free-international-calls/ which provide free International calling to many countries both landlines and some mobiles (depends on the country).

You need to have free calls to 0870 or 0845 numbers included in your plan.
