Was looking at getting a new storage heater and came across a link to get more efficient storage heaters with a grant ? I can see it being believable with the sharp uprise of tariffs but then again too good to be true ! Anybody done this upgrade ?

be wary & check it out thoroughly e.g. where is the funding really coming from?
(I say this because where I am there are "grants" advertised as available by some companies for replacing double glazing but they are actually "funded" from within the industry so at the end of the day the customer is paying for their "grant" one way or another). Imo it's more a lead generation scheme.

I keep getting phone calls from people telling me I can get grants for storage heaters but every time I look it up I only see the ECO scheme that you have to be on benefits to qualify and see nothing mentioned about storage heaters. I'm guessing they are scam callers.

Register your numbers with the Telephone Preference Service and after 28 days you'll be certain that they're scams !

I'm not convinced there is any such thing as a 'more efficient' storage heater. All electric heaters are basically 100% efficient. The way one storage heater could be better than another is if a newer one were able when the heat was released better. From a purely financial perspective I bet keeping the current storage heaters makes the most sense.

Even then all the energy put into it has to come out of it.

Storage heaters won't ever get "more efficient" unless they are actually heat pumps or something - moving heat from outside to inside. But I mean, that's no longer a storage heater.

Anything that tries to tell you it is a more efficient storage heater is probably a scam. 3kW of electricity going in, is going to be 3kW of heat coming out, minus a tiny amount of say, light because the element is glowing.

It's true than Energy In = Energy Out, but from the user's perspective an NSH will be more efficient if it uses less energy to deliver the same amount of useful heat.  That's what an HHR NSH will do, because less heat is dissipated at times when it's not required, e.g. overnight and if you're out during the day.
However, careful consideration needs to be given before replacing an old-style plain box of bricks with a modern HHR version with a fan and a convector.  They're not cheap, so the payback period may be quite lengthy.  Ideally, you also need to install a 24h circuit to each one.  That said, HHRs may make the property slightly more attractive when selling.

I think when it comes to heat retention, the biggest issue in low end housing is probably old rotten single glazed windows.  The draft in my property is insane, yet every scheme I have looked at out of curiosity doesnt offer new double glazed windows, instead only much less efficient things.  Is this down to them deliberately trying to avoid the expensive stuff?

Also of interest new boiler schemes the majority I have looked at only allow people with no boiler to qualify, so if you have an inefficient boiler you stuck with it.  Although on EDF they will subsidise new boiler replacement for those with a rubbish ancient one.  (remember my post where only 20% of my gas bill is actual usage).
  • When I first moved in to my house 8 years ago, I was told about grants to replace old storage heaters, after looking at a couple I quickly realised that unless you are in receipt of benefits you will not be eligible for any grants for home improvements to be greener or more efficient. I only realised this after I had enquired online, the type that ask you for an e-mail address, street address etc! I was then inundated by other companies offering grants for all sots of grants, from cavity walls, loft insulation, windows, doors, heaters, you name it they called me / e-mailed me / sent me letters, I assume that some if not most were honest but again no  benefits equals no financial help!!!
