BA paid refund to someone else's account and refuse to sort it out

I was due to fly to Spain in September 2020 with BA and, due to covid, both flights were cancelled.  At the time they issued vouchers but on 1 April 2022 e-mailed to say that due to issues with the vouchers, they were not going to refund the money and Avios points and they would let me know when the refund was made.  I allowed the required 30 days before chasing this up as nothing appeared in my bank account but the Avios points were refunded on 8 April.  BA replied saying that they had refunded the money to my account ending in "....".  The numbers they quoted are nothing whatsoever to do with the card that I paid for the flights from, which I immediately notified them of.  They have consistently said that as they have refunded the money and it has gone through, it's down to me to sort out with my bank and PayPal, who I made the original payment through.  I have talked to both of these organisations and they have confirmed that not only did I not hold a card ending in the 4 digits given but no refund had been received either through PayPal or directly into my bank account.  I informed BA of this but they have sounded like a stuck record through all of this and say that as the refund went through, it's my problem.  I have asked for full information as to what bank, etc the refund was made and they have now stopped replying.  Anyone else had this problem and know what to do - I am £247.48 out of pocket due to BA's incompetence and I cannot afford to lose this money.

You should take legal advice about the idea of suing them. If you have home insurance, you might find that you have legal expense cover, and via this cover can get legal advice, and even legal representation.
