Holiday Insurance Duration

Advice from this site, sensibly, is that you should take out holiday insurance from the moment you book your holiday, in order to cover all sorts of things before you go.
However any quotes I put together for sites I try, allow you to only specify the exact holiday duration for your insurance cover. Naturally, if you extend this over several months to cover the pre-holiday period, the quote goes through the roof!!
One alternative would be to get annual cover, but that seems like overkill.
Any advise?

If your holiday is for two weeks then that is the duration of your holiday, not the duration of holiday insurance. If you are insuring for one trip the insurance starts from payment until end of duration date.1

You take out the policy as soon as you have paid out money or made a commitment to that you don't want to lose.
The dates they are asking for is the start date (when will you leave your front door to go on holiday) to the end date (when will you get home).1 -
OK thanks maybe I misunderstood it - by asking me for the specific holiday duration dates, I thought that implied that was the only cover I'd receive.
