Roaming iPhone SE 22

I have just returned from Italy. I have a iPhone SE22 and I am with Giffgaff. While there I had roaming on and I could get data but I wasn’t able to text or make calls, I had to use WhatsApp. I contacted Giffgaf and they said all was in order with my account and I tried various things to try to get the calls and text but nothing worked

Did incoming calls work? May be outgoing calls/text were not being made with the country code. So to call/text back to the UK it will be +4411234567, it will be +3911234567 for Italy, etc. If you were already prepending with +, then there was another issue.1
