Hatchback with decent MPG

Looking for car recommendations (petrol or hybrid). I want to buy a family hatch. Priorities are MPG and reliability and something that's at least a bit fun to drive Ideally I'd like something suitable for city and motorway driving. My budget is up to 25k give or take. So far I'm debating between a Toyota Corolla 1.8 automatic and a Toyota Yaris 1.5 automatic. Any thoughts?

Is there a reason why you are looking at automatics?
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Yes because I live in a city and my commute to work is in and out of traffic. Just think it'll be easier. Also my partner prefers to drive automatics.

I've collected my Toyota Corrola 1.8 hybrid 4 weeks ago (brand new) and i must be honest the MGP is insane. At the moment i'm averaging 63 MPG. Love the car, very easy to drive and extremely comfortable. With your budget you would need to look at used ones.
Toyota Yaris starts at about £21,000 so this would be within your budget, if looking at new cars.

Wow that's amazing! What kind of driving do you do? Is it comfortable on the motorway? Did you buy the hatchback?

Motorway and city for me. Yes, extremely comfortable. It's a hatchback design. I ordered it in mid January and collected it on 19th April, so it was extremely fast. They build the 1.8 in the UK, which was probably why it was so quick.

I used to own a 1.6 diesel Ford focus (2012) and it used to average 75 mpg on my commute to work of 74 miles.
Only cost £20 a year for road tax, these days cars seem to cost more to run.

I had a 2014 Auris hybrid and the mpg was no better than my 2007 Focus.  The Auris was as dull as ditchwater to drive.

The Corolla is the replacement for the Auris and, I think, the same mechanicals.

You may achieve better fuel economy if you have a different driving profile to me.

    Motorway and city for me.
I should elaborate on this. Whist i have done some motorway miles the majority of my journeys are round town. Of course it will also depend on how heavy footed you are. Having gone from a Peugeot 3008 diesel and 35MPG there's no comparison with the fuel economy.

Do you have the facility to charge a car at home or work?
Depending on how many miles you cover in a typical day a plug in hybrid could also be an option. I bought one recently and it works very well for my use case.
