    A friend gets constant texts and emails from his provider, Scottish Power, saying to book an appointment for a smart meter. One of the recent ones was that his meters were faulty and needed replacing. He told them to prove the fault existed without removing the meters, his meters are 40 years old and still provide the same monthly readings that they did when he moved into the place in 1983. He uses the same daily kWh's that he used when he moved in, he doesn't have the internet only a smart phone with a 2 Gb data per month. He's a bit like me but reads books or listens to the DAB radio rather than watch TV or surf the net and his daily usage is no more than 2 kWh per day for most days, the exception is the day he uses the washer then it's around 5 kWh. 
    He has no landline of games consoles, as I said he reads books or listens to the radio.  
    If a meter has passed its certificated life, then the supplier has no option but to replace it. If the homeowner declines the request for access, the supplier has a statutory right to enter a property (using force if necessary) to effect the meter change. The fact that his meters are accurate doesn’t change anything. Suppliers will test a sample of meters that they remove at end-of-life and, if warranted , they will apply for a certificate extension.

    BEIS has agreed that suppliers can now fit smart meters when meters are deemed to be end-of-life. There is nothing sinister going on here: many suppliers no longer have access to analogue meters.

    We had Eon Next change our E7 meter.  For the first few days the new meter just showed single rate electricity but once the paper work was sorted, it has been showing two rates.  This leads me to believe, all of this can be done remotely.  
    I find the E7 to work well for us.
