@TadleyBaggie a million thanks for the carpet cutter link.  I ordered and paid for it, then got an email saying it was out of stock, should be with me in five days.  Then, surprisingly, I got a call from the company saying that they couldn't get hold of the one I'd ordered, and they'd be sending a more expensive replacement.  I received the Olfa today and its fantastic - like a pizza cutter with a handle, you push it away from you.  So much easier than the stanley knife, not dreading doing it now, much gratitude.

Works well doesn't it. I had to take up a bedroom carpet and being able to quickly slice it into manageable pieces was great.
