Taking carpets and underlay up

Any suggestions for a good 'tool' to cut carpets? I've bought a stanley knife, just wondered what other people use. Thank you.

A sharp stanley knife is fine.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1

Stanley knifes are fine, although you need to change the blades quite regularly.

Do not forget to use gloves as there will be a lot of staples in the underlay and use a mask as there will be a lot of dust etc.2

A decent pair of pliers will also be useful. You will probably find the underlay and a few edges of carpet held down with staples. The pliers will be handy to get the staples out.

I agree with all of the above. Assuming you are removing the carpets to be "binned" before new ones are laid, then an ordinary Stanley knife with a sharp blade is fine - and it's a really useful tool to have anyway, it's got 1001 uses. Keep a pack of new blades handy - they're cheap as chips and a sharp blade makes a world of difference. And yes - pliers/pincers to remove the millions and squillions of staples that you'll find are holding down the underlay

Shoe knife and tack lifter are my go to tools for this job. Plus a pair of tile pliers.0

Thank you very much, I managed to get the last one in stock TadleyBaggie, and I'll find something in my late husband's tool box for the staples.
As the chipboard floors are completely black with mould I wanted to do it as quickly as possible so I can get it all out into the garden.£216 saved 24 October 20140 -
What a relief, my son is going to come and help me.
I'm 65 and can't seem to get my fitness back after Covid laziness. The furniture is going at 9 am on Friday 29th July, so I'll be able to start cutting it ready to roll/tape/bag, having to wear a mask as it's slimy and black with mould underneath. The damp/timber company that are coming to replace all the floors said they'd have to do each room at a time if I couldn't clear them by the Monday. Thanks everyone.£216 saved 24 October 20141
