Just found out that Tesco bank has placed a Cifa on my credit file. What do I do (screenshots)?

I didn't even know what "Cifa" meant until I looked it up online. Apparantly it's to do with fraud. I have no idea why this has been placed on my file since I have never had an account associated with Tesco. Please help. Thanks.

So you have been a victim of fraud with Tesco- they aren't saying you have committed fraud. You don't have to be a customer with Tesco, in all likelihood someone has used your details to try and obtain credit from Tesco.

Can you see the application/search on your credit report?

All I can see is what I screenshot. I've tried calling action fraud but I was on hold forever. Should i try calling hem again tomorrow when I have more time?

Have a look at your credit files to see if other applications have been made.

If you find more, you could call Action Fraud. There's no need otherwise.

ActionFraud are useless, and irrelevant in this case.

Tesco obviously think you're the victim of fraud.  Check your files and if there is nothing untoward move on with your life.

Protective registration is not a bad thing, and you got it for free.

Look at all of the pages in your file, they're there for your own information.

Do those dates in the screenshot make sense?

I have never seen this before and not expert in the process, but the dates read to me as though the CIFAS application was before the suspect activity.  Can that be correct?

As I say, just an uninformed observation.  Perhaps someone who knows more will be able to clarify.

Look on your credit report, the full file and check all the soft and hard searches. Also look for any accounts that show as open on your report that are not accounts you have personally opened.

Do not bother calling Action Fraud, raise an online report, the number is all you need, there will be no investigation by the police.

The registration is protective, it is not a negative, it just means that if you try to take out credit in the next two years there might be an extra security step or check to make sure it is actually you.

You dont get to see CIFAS markers in relation to when people think you are guilty of fraud, the ones you see are either protective registration or where they believe you are a victim of fraud. The only impact can be that lending decisions dont go straight through because lenders want to make sure its really you making the application.

  • Thanks everyone for your responses. I have just got off the phone with Tesco and have been told that it was a well-known fraud ring that tried to use my details. They said they tried to send out a letter but it went to my old address so I didn't get it. They're now sending out another letter explaining it all in writing. It's a good job I persisted with the calls I've made (I was getting nowhere) otherwise I would have never know.
