Given he tried to drive off without leaving his details thinking he had got away with it expect an argument when you tell him the cost and mention a hire car. I predict he won't pay up.
Bingo, you're almost certainly going to get the run around when it turns out the repair isn't £100 (hint, it's probably going to be closer to £1000), whatever quote you get he'll have a mate who can do it for less. If he didn't want to lose his no claim discount, he shouldn't have crashed into you and driven off.

I'd just let your insurance companies handle it.

Are you going to trust this man to settle without delay/aggro when he drove off in the first place?

I watched a person reverse directly into my parked car today whist I was in work, then get out and check the back of their own car, without looking at mine, and then proceed to drive off. I had a witness to this event. I got the persons phone number from their home, and rang them, they advised they would pay for the "repair privately as it will be no more than a couple of hundred pounds" and to tell them the amount. The damage is a dent to the wheelarch with minor scratches. I don't really want to go through insurance as I know despite it not being my fault, it can knock my premiums up. My problem is that I need my car for my job, and I work every day basically, so I would have to hire a courtesy car for at least a day, or take a day off work, to drop my car off at a garage for the day for the repairs.

Would you advise I get a quote for repairs tomorrow morning, I wasn't able today as was working until late, and then add any additional cost to myself e.g. day off work, and advise the person to transfer me the money immediately, or we just go through insurance? Or is it cheeky to charge someone for my time?
    Thanks.

If it's a small dent and paint fix you can probably get someone to come to your workplace and fix it.

My idea was to get a quote early tomorrow morning, advise him to transfer the money directly into my account that morning, or we can just process an insurance claim later that afternoon.

I thought that might be a simpler solution for both parties, but probably not after reading replies.

OP, I had a bump a few years ago and the other car's owner wanted to settle privately. Turned out my old Fiesta was a write off, so the cost would have been £750. They didn't want to pay so insurance sorted it. For a small dent and some scratches, you might get away with a minor repair - there are plenty of mobile repair people for that sort of issue. Presumably there is some connection between you and the other guy as you were able to get their phone number - if it was me I'd get a quote and give them a chance to pay up, then go to insurer if not.

Go via your insurance and I'd also report it to the police as a damage only, fail to stop.

Just do it the right way.
If the other party later reports it to their insurer, that info will get back to yours anyway, and if you didn't tell them, they'll cancel your insurance with all the fun for life as a result of that.

With the hundreds of cases reported by third parties cannot remember a single time when the insurance was cancelled as a consequence.
  • Playing "what if" on insurance websites is a very bad idea and may come back to bite you in the backside.

Digital footprints can last a long time and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if insurers have algorithms that flag up that sort of activity.

None of us want to risk our NCD - your concern has to be with yours not his.
I know. I just went on a comparison website, and my insurance jumps 60 pound a year, if I add in an accident that wasn't my fault in the last 5 years... so an extra 300 pounds over 5 years because someone drove into my parked car. Amazing.
We had an accident that wasn't our fault last year, dealt with through our insurance company. Our premium this year was £100 lower than last year.
