How would I find definitively what I can get here
Plusnet whom I am with say @44 is max (despite Fibre to a box less than 300yds away), but every online page tells me, no problems getting more.

You might end up paying extra for slower speeds! To make sure you get the speed you're paying for, please enter your address
...and then
We've checked this deal. Our speed checker shows you should get speeds between 56Mb and 74Mb

Depends on the quality of your line and the capacity of the exchange. What you "should" get and what you "do" get are two different things.A lot depends on your minimum speed guarantee.Average speed is just that - across the customer base. Some will get less, some will get more.1

The best estimate will be this checker using your actual address.

Also, the nearest fibre cabinet may not actually be the one you are connected to, cables go odd ways at times depending on when the infrastructure was constructed.2 -
TBH , as the line and the FTTC equipment are Openreach, what the individual ISP will provide will be pretty much the same provided it’s the same tier of speed compared….the way ISP have to advertise average speeds is pointless….if a particular ISP , averaging all their 80Mb customers across the country come up with a figure of 63Mb , that is of no use to you as far as speed you should expect on your individual line, you could get 80Mb if close to the cabinet, much , much less if a long way from the cabinet.
The DSL checker link will give the predicted speed for your line, that’s what every ISP should be able to provide, the only difference really is the small differences that the ISP supplied router may introduce…these speeds are the connection speeds, throughput could vary as that can be dependent on how much backhaul bandwidth the individual ISP has purchased etc.

Could someone interpret this so that I can be sure I know what I am talking about0

Your predicted FTTC speed is 56 to 74Mb , that’s if you purchased the 80Mb speed tier, Gfast is also available, ( not all ISP sell Gfast though ) and that is 72 to 151Mb.FTTPod is a product that some niche ISP sell where if you pay for the network construction, you can have FTTP but it’s expensive.
If you currently have FTTC , the router statistics will give a clearer indication of what speed your line can provide, obviously some people have a line that can be made to perform better , if the customers internal set up is negatively impacting the speed , optimising their setup can improve speed , or if there is a line problem that needs Openreach to fix, getting that repaired can improve speed, but it’s also possible that everything is a good as it gets , and that the speed obtained is the speed your line is capable of and cannot be improved.
If you want to know is your line likely to be closer to the 56Mb or the 74Mb , the only way you will know is by getting FTTC ( if you don’t already have it ) and looking at the line stats from the router.0 -
The ISP will also give you a Minimum Guaranteed Speed and from the table that will be around the Downstream Handback Threshold, that is important as if your connection speed falls below that they are obliged to come out and fix the problem or if they cannot, let you leave without penalty.
Although that sounds great, if you want to move to another ISP that uses the Openreach network you may just take the problem with you.0
