  • Apologies again the above amount is per 4 weeks so £180.90 per week. I was contracted out for may years if that is relevant.

From what you've posted those 6 years will take you to £218.82/week, you can't quite reach £221.20 (you didn't have enough time post 2016).

So pre tax you will be getting £1,971/year extra at current year rates.

You need to get your call back booked, about a 6 to 8 week wait but it will stop the clock. I personally wouldn't risk a cheque in the post this late on.  You could try calling first thing in the morning.
  • I pay tax at 20%, so even taking that into account it is definitely worth doing?

I spent most of yesterday back reading this forum and noted the address HM Revenue & Customs, National Insurance Contributions and Employee Office, BX5 5DB, with advice to send a cheque with NI Number on the back by registered post and get proof of postage. I assume I address the cheque to HM Revenues and Customs. I don't wish to clog up the telephone lines as I am sure lots of folk are trying to get through.

Thanks to both of you for taking time out to answer my question.
  • Hi molerat

I did actually ring this morning on 0800 731 0469 and got through after 30 mins or so. The man took my details i.e.. name, address, NI number. He then told me he couldn't help me as I had pressed the wrong numbers on the menu. Apparently I am part of a newer system that he doesn't have access to. Will this mean I am registered on there system somewhere due to the info he took?

I needed to press 'changes to state pension' which said it was for changes of address etc and then it clicked to unobtainable signal, so I gave up.

So looking at that figure, I will achieve a break even point as approx. two and a half years/130ish weeks? Thank you for making it so simple to understand.

I think £1971 per year is before tax, so closer to £1577 after tax and you'll get your money back in a little over three years.

  • QrizB sorry I don't know how to do quotes.

Thank you. I forgot about the tax, at three years it still seems a sensible thing to do. I have sent them a letter by snail mail and also submitted the' request' a call back' on their system. There was advice that said you should date it and copy it and I haven't managed to do that yet. I might have to send another one tomorrow when someone is around to help me with the IT. They asked for suggestions and I said a date submitted box would be helpful.
  • Phoned the pensions service this morning and got through in about. 30mins.They are going to send me a statement that I can then send to HMRP to get some kind of unique number, so guess I am making progress. Once again thank you for all your help.

Who thinks they should extend deadline until such time you can get a Government Gateway ID/account needed to check NI record online without the need for having a passport/driving licence necessary to obtain one now.
