Commissioning Gas Smart Meter!

So since my forced move to EDF I have been on at them to get my gas meter connected to automatically send them readings...so far without any joy.  I'm with Octopus for electric and they are able to receive readings from the electric meter without any problems.  As a previous customer of Avro (dual fuel) they were able to receive readings from both meters also.

I received an email from them yesterday saying to contact them when I am in front of the meter so that I can help them with the commissioning process.

Has anyone else had/done this before and can advise just what is likely to be required for me to do when in front of the meter?

Thanks

The supplier gas meter does not communicate directly with the network, but it communicates via the electricity meter so the process is not quite as simple if you are not duel fuel with a supplier.

It is not a case of you pressing buttons that make it work, but pressing buttons in alignment with them doing things at their end, needing you to confirm codes etc. so you will have to do this when you are on the call with them.

just a point... isn't that costing more having seperate suppliers for gas and elec?

would you not be better to switch the gas to octopus... for cost saving and getting the dual fuel deal?
if octopus are suppling elec then that might make the gas smart meter work better if as the post above suggests, the gas feeds data via the elec smart meter

    just a thought

The days of cheaper dual fuel tariffs are long gone unfortunately. It was really just the convenience of having one contract for two utilities.

As long as Octopus would let the OP switch the gas on the SVR - probably yes. But Octopus would rather have the switch onto a fixed deal !!!

Octopus are quite happy to have their electricity customers switch their gas to them. I did exactly that last month (and from EDF, as it happens). I posted about it in the general Octopus feedback thread.
They initially put my gas on the SVT but I then moved to Tracker, which is currently cheaper than the SVT (averaging 4.2p per kWh so far this month).

Back in early April I emailed Octopus to ask about switching both my leccy and gas to them on the capped rate - I got a reply after about 10 days to say it wasn't possible !!

All reports say you have to call them and they will allow you to join on a SVT.

My first email to hello@ was on the 26th of March, I got agreement that I could move my gas to Tracker via Flexible on the 6th of April and my switch took place on the 24th.
Maybe it worked for me because, like the OP, I was already an Octopus electricity customer? Or maybe it depends which CS rep you get?

I suspect that is probably correct. I'm one of the unfortunates who has ended up with BG for leccy and EDF for gas !!!

    Good news: it's not correct.
I also ended up with BG for leccy (the legendary Zero Fixed Oct 22 tariff with no standing charge !) and EDF for gas.  As EDF were such a nightmare (difficult/slow/impossible to contact via phone or chat, charging cash/cheque rate when on DD, overcharging on 31 March) I phoned Octopus (using a referral code to get £50) and it goes live on Friday !
