It is ridiculous!  It's a 30gb/month that is 'free' as part of the virgin media package. The 'best value' way to add data is 3gb for £20 to the package....that doesn't last long with video conf calls!

    More calls to virgin tomorrow.....

Make sure you order the GiffGaff one that PragmaticMoneySaver suggested to use before they come to install it so you don't throw away any more money.

...or one of the many network 3 plans such as unlimited 5g data (includes tethering and use in 70 countries worldwide) monthly contract £28 a month.

Hi, thanks for all the suggestions.

Tbh along with moving house and a multitude of other things I didn't have time to get a new sim, and last time I did I had to get my phone unlocked which took 2 days. Faff I can do without.

Anyway, for future reference they can't bring the date forward, but have offered me the money spent on top ups back, as well as giving me free data. When I get the service I'll then get some credit hopefully for the £60/month I've been paying for their media service but recieving naff all.

    Thanks again 👍

So since you have moved house you havn't had even 10 minutes to apply for a sim card to save yourself £100 a week?? I really find that hard to beleive.

Believe what you like. I don't have the time to have no phone for 2 days whilst it may need unlocking, faff about numbers, plus I've just been abroad so needed phone at all times. Not quite sure why I'm justifying it.

My question wasn't about my SIM comings and goings, more about Virgin Media and a course of action to take....
  • A lot of phones are no longer SIM locked and even those that are take minutes to unlock with a variety of online services; but a few minutes might be too much to save 100s of pounds!

The point made was relevant.  If you're considering claiming losses as part of a compensation claim, you have a duty to mitigate them.  Clocking up hundreds of pounds of data charges because you couldn't be bothered to seek a more cost-effective solution was absolutely your choice, but you can't then reasonably claim the full amount.

Always amazes me people have no time to do anything, yet still have time to come and post on here.
20 seconds show Virgin Mobile use the Vodafone network.
20 seconds to see Voxi use the Vodafone network and offer unlimited data for £35 per month.
No need to get the phone unlocked.

I'm on a £16 per month Unlimited data SIM only from Smarty (On Three network) via uSwitch instead of fixed broadband. 1 month contract so no exit fee. £20 per month after first 12 months.

Only downside is TP-Link 4G+ Router doesn't actually pick 4G+ with Smartie/Three network configuration, so I'm using an old SIM-Free handset as a hotspot instead, but you can use an old router as extender to allow for more smart devices, just give your new network same SSID and password as the old router's WiFi and your devices will re-pair automatically, you won't even lift a finger.

£100 for data top up is a bit extreme, and you can't claim compensation for first 3 weeks' wait as it was reasonable, maybe for the further delay.

I'm just speaking from experience, last time I unlocked my previous Huawei phone it took 2 days - apparently Huaweis are a nightmare to unlock, although you make a fair point about trying to mitigate losses.

Tbh I didn't know that if virgin use vodaphone network, I could use voxi (I hadn't heard of them). Lesson learnt.

I had already asked virgin and they said that I was unable to change my package (as it was linked to the media package) so assumed my options were limited!

Thanks for the tips Yorkie 👍

If your phone isso essential to you then surely you have an old phone that you keep as a backup. In that case all you needed to do was order the sim and put it in the old phone when it arrived.

I just find it crazy how easily you decided that the only option was to pay £100 a WEEK for data and just accepted it without looking into any other options.
