Whilst shopping in Sainsbury's yesterday I picked up a Sainsbury's Bank 'Travel Money Card' -- described as "the safe and secure way to carry your holiday money".

It's now 4 years since we last holidayed abroad but are due to do so in mid June. Unfortunately, because of the passage of time I've forgotten everything I knew about travel money cards (which wasn't much) and the best credit card for overseas usage.

I used to have a Revolut account until hearing of the behaviour allegedly going on in the company's headquarters, so I packed that in.

Some quick questions then:

* would travelers more experienced than me recommend the Sainsbury's 'travel money card'? It's free to use except that  2% is charged for "loads and reloads into GBP purse". So presumably Sainsbury's want £2 from me for adding £100 to the card.

* Would I be better off sticking with my Nationwide basic account debit card to withdraw cash  from overseas ATMs?

* I also have a  Halifax credit card ('Clarity', I think it is) that's very rarely used. I seem to recall this card being recommended for usage on overseas holiday, but am not sure if the recommendation related to using it for ATM cash withdrawals or for credit card purchases?

Help appreciated; thanks.

Don't be tempted by such cards. I don't know offhand the cost of using your Nationwide debit card overseas but it's likely to be less overall, and simpler. Take that as backup for your Clarity card, which is ideal for travel. Pay by card whenever possible rather than withdrawing cash frequently, always avoiding payment in pounds when offered by a terminal or an ATM.
