Shell Energy Retail Limited does not produce its own gas.prowla said:My energy company is Shell - I think it produces its own gas. Therefore it is not a victim of the energy price increases and therefore it is making a profit from them.

Just because Shell plc, the global $300bn + company, produces gas doesn’t mean the UK company Shell Energy supply theirs exclusively from the parent company. They will be paying the market rate just like it’s competitors.prowla said:My energy company is Shell - I think it produces its own gas. Therefore it is not a victim of the energy price increases and therefore it is making a profit from them.Arch2 -
I think Shell would argue that each business must stand on its own and i'll bet Shell energy buy their gas at market rates off Shell.0

Hearing these comments alot now, but unlike the OP from people who are working and earning a decent income. Some people it seems just don't like paying more for their energy but happy to go out on a Saturday night and spend the same amount having a nice meal, a few drinks and a taxi home.
It's going to be a reality check for lots, it's going to be about priorities, even those who can afford to pay their bills will be looking at where they can maybe reduce their outgoings to compensate for higher energy costs once they actually realise how much they have increased alongside some of the other increases we are seeing.

Fixed rate DD is a sham by its name, its never ever actually been fixed rate.
To answer though you really need to understand your contract, , your unit rate, your usage,to understand if what they doing is accurate for your contract.
First off it is legal. Whether its an accurate DD amount to reflect your actual bill requires you to understand your bill and contract terms.
Ofgem is to blame for this mess for allowing so many to just look at their DD, the mass selling of fixed DD and dumb down the entire energy market.2 -
Ofgem arnt to blame.. its the millions of people who have no clue how to run their households accounts properly and expect everything to be click n collect and that some mysterious force runs everything nicely for them. These people then blame all and everybody instead taking some actual responsibility to ensure their finances are fit for purpose for the life they lead and make sure they have at least some knowledge of what a DD actually means for utilities.Chrysalis said:Fixed rate DD is a sham by its name, its never ever actually been fixed rate.

Obviously there are the old/infirm and vulnerable who need a little help but as far as I can see the majority of people crying into their laptops on forums dont come under this category.2 -
Yep. It could be the best way to hit the UK carbon reduction targets. People have been told for years to save energy yet when it's cheap they don't bother. As soon as the price goes up it might spark some actual checking of how consumption can be reduced whether that's walking to the shop instead of driving the car or turning the heating down 1C.Mstty said:What will be interesting is the overall reduction in energy usage this winter compared to previous years.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.1 -
Chrysalis said:Fixed rate DD is a sham by its name, its never ever actually been fixed rate.It has always been a fixed rate, what it has never been is a fixed DD.That is the key misunderstanding for many consumers.A fixed rate tariff does exactly what it says, it fixes the rates, no sham there...2
