My bill will rocket from £89 per month to £270!!!! How is that fair or legal?

The rises are not fun for anyone, but I really cannot get my head around why people decide that just because they do not like something they think it is "unfair", "illegal" or "theft".[Deleted User] said:I fear that we are going to see a lot more posts like this as people begin to realise just how much the cost of energy has risen over the past 12 months, with further increases over the horizon.16 -
They (whoever they are) can't understand it as we have had cheap energy for decades. They have never calculated energy in kWh just an amount.
What will be interesting is the overall reduction in energy usage this winter compared to previous years.3 -
On my enforced transfer to EDF the estimated gas use they used was within a couple hundred kWh of my estimated figure and the DD was 1/12th of that based on October 21 SVR. I have upped the DD by 50% to take into account the lack of DDs being taken at the start which were not covered by my SOLR credit and the April rise, I have calculated I would start going into credit in July around the same time as their 6 month review.Dolor said:I had a conversation with my daughter about this only yesterday as she is also struggling to understand EDF’s estimated annual usage figure post an enforced transfer from the failed Utility Point. Whatever algorithm EDF or its data collector is using to calculate estimated annual usage needs to be reviewed.

they will also find it hard to understand that even at the current SVT prices the energy companies are not making a profit (indeed probably a loss) on domestic energy supply.MattMattMattUK said:

It's quite ironic that a system that was put in place to prevent energy companies making excessive profits is now possibly forcing them to make a loss and protecting customers from the real cost of energy.
As "normal" domestic customers we should really be thanking our luck stars that we are not on a district/communal heating system or even worse, running a business.1 -
I think this debate needs a thread of it's own about business/ethics, economics and nationalisation?0

My energy company is Shell - I think it produces its own gas. Therefore it is not a victim of the energy price increases and therefore it is making a profit from them.0
