Passport Renewal or New Passport

Not sure which service I need online Passport Application.
I have a old Passport that expired in 1997 
I want a Passport So do I go Renew Passport OR New Passport whilst applying online?
Help appreciated.

Renewal ,renewed mine just came delivered by tnt. Took 9 weeks from when I sent application pack.

If it expired in 1997 is it the old blue hard backed passport?  If so it will be treated as first time application. You will need to complete all sections of the form including parents details   And you will need your birth certificate and if you have changed your name from birth any evidence of change of. Name. You should have at least one original document that was issued before you passport was issued.
if it’s the burgundy passport it will be a renewal but you will need someone to countersign your application

It will be the original blue one as long as it was an adult passport (click here).

On a practical note, I doubt OP will have an original document issued before 1987.
