Universal Credit self employment

Anyone know if can work 16 hours a week self employed without having MIF being applied? Been offered a role with a friend but would be pointless taking if I’d lose money?

Whether or not the MIF is applicable will depend on whether you are to be treated as gainfully self employed. That'll be for DWP to decide based on your circumstances. Are you still intending to look for paid work for the remainder of the week?

If you start gainful self employment you are exempt from the MIF for 12 months.

You will have provide UC of details of your self employed income and expenditure on the last day of every assessment period.

Bear in mind too that being self employed will also require you to mange your tax affairs.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Yes will be looking for work aswell, I was running a window cleaning round but broke my shoulder 18 months ago and after 2 operations I’m looking to restart so not sure if will be classed as just starting up or not. I’m hoping this role will pick up as summer comes as it’s all power washing etc..:

If you were not on UC at the time you still have a 12 month grace period. If you were already on UC and had a 12 month grace period then you will not, to the best of my knowledge, get another.

  • I was on working tax credits before the injury can’t go back now though. Hopefully will sort something as really want to get back working even if doesn’t make me much extra money it’s a start and perfect for me atm as still have regular physio appointments. Will see what work coach says. Thanks for the replies
