car door scratch controversy in a parking bay

My grandson is 10 and the child locks are still on the car.pinkshoes said:If your 6 year old child opened the car door and there was a scratch that lines up with the edge of the door, then it is highly likely that your 6 year old did indeed open the door into the other car.
The insurance can sort it.
Surely with 6 year olds, you should have a child lock on the rear doors of the car?!?! I have 6 year old twins and have the rear child locks switched on because I don't trust one of them not to try and open the door when the car is moving, and secondly I don't trust them not to open the doors in car parks and cause damage to someone else's car!0 -

Is it really that common though.man.united332 said:thanks all for your replies, while I will happily pay for the scratch if i know for sure it has caused by my kid, i know its a common scam and people will use this opportunity to make some extra bucks , they park so close to your car and wait for the right moment to create a scene and in case of kids its really easy for them to put pressure on you, but I am not going to budge and they wont take a penny out of me and can take it to insurance if they like.
while we are at it, I am still waiting for a call from numerous good people who has left marks on my door in various car parks and on my bumper and just ran away.
I had couple of instances where people try to blame me for their scratches, and my response is always simple, call your insurance and report it to police.
whether I am at fault or not, by book I am not allowed to settle it anyway without involving insurance.
This whole thread is wrapped up in this one post.
You have history of this.
You know your child damaged the other car. It's almost impossible to be in or exiting your vehicle and not know when a different door has hit something. The noise and or vibration give it away.
Just like the other people in the other car would have heard or felt the contact.
You know how difficult it is for the other person to get you to own up and pay up.
You know most people won't go through their insurance.
You know all this so why post this thread to start with?0 -
Thanks everyone for your useful inputs, i didn't start this post to decide who is at fault because it doesnt matter, we all got insurance to sort these kind of matters and i am not the one who will pay other party to settle anything regardless of at fault or not, I pay a decent amount every year to my insurance company to do their job, in addition I got legal cover and NCB cover, if I start paying these third parties myself then I'll be left with no money.
I started this thread to know if these kinds of incidents are covered by insurance companies and how they react etc etc.
The other party has insurance details and this is their problem to think about next year premium, excess etc
I had similar but not exactly the same incidents in past so i kind of know how people react, in these situations the moment the other party start asking for money you know something is not right, for me the right thing to do is to call insurance and report it to Police.
if you like to settle it with third party and not through insurance its your choice.

So do you. As you will have a claim against you...man.united332 said:Thanks everyone for your useful inputs, i didn't start this post to decide who is at fault because it doesnt matter, we all got insurance to sort these kind of matters and i am not the one who will pay other party to settle anything regardless of at fault or not, I pay a decent amount every year to my insurance company to do their job.

So did you report it to the police & report the incident to your insurance company?
You know your child opened the door onto the other car, yet are hoping that the other car owner who was not at fault will simply not bother...
Kinda sums up a lot of people these days.😢
Next time it might be someone doing it to your car. How would you feel then?Life in the slow lane2 -
Why would it be reported to the police?born_again said:

Indeed. If details were exchanged there is no crime to report.user1977 said:

My son was getting in the back of the car one time and was messing around and kicked the door in to the car next door, I heard it saw the damage and promised to sort it out (dent) all easy peasy, no need for insurance no messy claims.
The only thing was the guy wouldn't stop ranting at the time so my broadest Glasgow accent needed to be brought in to action, think he was a Man Utd supporter too.
