If train tickets were cheaper, that might be a start!! if i can fly somewhere within the UK cheaper than getting a train, then its a no brainer. The rail companies have themselves to blame!!

I agree. It's far better to campaign for cheap trains/busses than against cheap flights surely? I once went across South Africa by train for forty quid, first class. I've also been across much of Canada for well under two hundred quid, first class.

But somebody I know recently took a train from Inverness to London, in order to catch a flight to Beijing. The train was more expensive than the flight. That's crackers!

This targeting of one specific issue is ridiculous, and ignores the fact that it's much more than aviation that causes climate change. I personally have relatives in the States and like to broaden my horizons so I fly transatlantic once a year and within Europe 2-3 times. However I don't drive a car, use as little electricity & gas as I can, etc (mainly because it saves me money, helping the environment is secondary). Does this make me worse than someone who doesn't fly but drives 50k+ miles per year??

    Quite possibly.

Air travel isn't being singled out; other sources are being targeted as well by campaigners. That includes 136 mile per day commutes.

there are probably thousands of under 30 pounds fares available now with ryanair flutsy, some people have got flights for pennies, my next three flights with ryanair are under 18 pounds each

as for the carbon footprint, im not convinced at all its true all this climate change business, but for the worried about the planet crowd you can all pay a carbon offset fee in any green charity or if its with easyjet just click to pay

this whole carbon footprint is really taking off now, and if big business can do their bit to help the planet and it dont cost them anything then they will be all for it, as long as the punters pay

    LOLThread!

Maybe they should make the trains cheaper here. They are ridiculously expensive, dirty and generally provide a crap service all round.
