If you booked with EasyJet, an overseas flight and accommodation at the same time, you would have ATOL protection.

Unfortunately no flights with Easyjet or Jet 2 to the Airport/resort and dates I was interested in.

Is there any risks with Ryanair I should be aware of?  I know they have a mixed reputation in social media.  I will have comprehensive travel insurance.
Just make sure you understand their terms, in particular stuff like checking in (they usually charge if you do it at the airport), baggage rules and sizes (no pooling), be aware if you're travelling with someone they will probably split you up if you don't select seats. As long as you understand their foibles they're a great airline, cheap and efficient, usually punctual and reliable. Make sure you get the app and upload COVID documentation, if it's still needed. Boarding passes need to be on paper or the app, don't think a pdf on a phone will work.

The risk is that if Ryanair cancel the flight you may end up paying for a hotel that you can’t travel to .

Checked with Staysure insurance. If at worst case Ryan air cancelled my flight, the comprehensive policy does not cover hotel losses.

Any recommendations for insurers that cover additional losses?  All hotels i checked on booking.com want payment 5 days before the start date.
Are you sure about that? It's a pretty rubbish insurance if it doesn't cover costs incurred due to flight cancellation, I suspect it does.

I contacted Staysure they said i have no cover to claim hotel costs incurred if I have to cancel my trip. Ryanair are the only airline which operates to an area I was planning to stay.  One can only claim if the flight is delayed for my than 12hrs and I decide to abandon my holiday.
Honestly when you read the terms it reads as if one is covered if your flight is cancelled and you can get to your destination.
Where I am looking to visit is only served by Ryanair 2x week and no other airline from my local airport.

It is very confusing! I have contacted another major travel insurer and they said usually one claims for losses against the airline, but they wanted to check and get back to me as they did not have a definitive response.

So you can claim if they delay the flight 12+ hours but not if they cancel it??
Regardless though, it's a tiny risk, there will always be things which might happen which might not be covered by insurance. For instance if you have one too many to drink and trip on the stairs and break your arm, no insurance will cover you when drunk, you could be faced with a big hospital bill or even repatriation costs. Far greater risk than losing the cost of a hotel stay, but one people take all the time.

True. But flight cancellations seem to be more frequent than pre-covid, hence a higher risk.

The insurance T&Cs I read actually state no cover if under the influence of drinks, drugs etc. It is a risk many people seem to take, most likely unaware their insurance is void if they have an accident at the time.
