price per person for two flights is dearer than for one person

I am trying to book  two business class flights to New Zealand next year. The prices  per person I am receiving are cheaper when I enter "one" passenger than "two".
Why is this, and can I do anything about it?

Perhaps they only have one seat still available at a discounted price?

when you book multiple people on one booking, all will be in the same fare bucket. eg if 1 seat left at £500 and next fare bucket is £700....if you book separately you will pay £500 + £700. Book together and you will pay 2 x £700

Possible and likely explanation already given above.

As to what can you do about it, the only option is to book both seats separately, e.g. using price example above, one at £500 and one at £700, saving the difference on one seats (£200).  Separate bookings (PNR’s) however comes with draw backs with perhaps seating on board split, different fare conditions or issues if there is flight disruption. If you go down this separate reservation route then ask the airline to link the PNR’s after booking.
